Team GReddy Racing 86 at Formula D Long Beach

http://greddy.com/featured/50

The Long Beach round of the 2017 Formula Drift Championships, kicks off our 6th year in the series with driver Ken Gushi, but our first year officially part of the Toyota Racing family.  (previously Scion Racing / SR by Toyota)

The season starts off with the traditional pre-season media day on the Tuesday before the race weekend.  We use this opportunity to give a FDLB course preview thanks to our new Team GReddy Racing x Nexen Tire x Toyota Racing 86 sponsor Blackvue...

We also debut the first episode of our all new web series... Sliding Places.   The planned 10 episode Sliding Places web series will not only feature exciting drifting action from each Formula Drift Pro round, but it will also go in-depth and behind the scenes with pro drifter, Ken Gushi and the entire Team GReddy Racing crew as they travel the country.

With the shortest off season in FD history,  the Team still was able to implement many new upgrades and changes to the 2017 season.   Friday practice went well and Ken felt confident for Qualifying.   In Qualifying run one, Ken laid down a solid 86pt first run, but developed a transmission problem right at the finish of the run, denaying the team a chance to better the qualifying position of 10th.
  See the run here:  https://youtu.be/AY_YrAw_zkg?t=1h4m8s

The qualifying set up the 32 bracket of Ken Gushi 10th vs. Georgy Chivchyan 23rd  in his V8 powered S15.   Ken drove an excellent lead run and a close follow for the easy win.

After a busy half-time break with team's hometown fans, Ken was introduced to a sold out Formula Drift Long Beach crowd and gave the Toyota fans a little show along with Toyota Racing teammate, Fredric Aasbo in his new Corolla IM.

The competitive 16 bracket placed Ken up against reining 2016 Formula Drift champion, Chris Forsberg for another door to door battle.  Unfortunately, the judges saw things differently then the cheering FDLB crowd and declared the V8 370Z of Forsberg the winner, ending round one for the team.

All in all it was another good learning experience for the team as we prepare for round two in FDOrlando at the end of this month,  April 28-29.

GReddy event coverage from Formula Drift FDLB

Ken Gushi in the GReddy Racing - Nexen Tire - SR by Toyota 86 claims 3rd place in the 2016 Formula Drift Pro Championships season opener on the Streets of Long Beach course.

From Formula Drift press release

"Round 1: Streets of Long Beach kicked off the new season in dramatic fashion. The volume of rain, the variable surface conditions of the street course, which made for treacherous conditions in general during Friday’s practice, created a rain delay, which ultimately resulted in the Series making the decision to draw on a provision of the Sporting Regulations that allows the Series to forgo Qualifying in the face of inclement weather. Drivers were placed into the Top 32 bracket based on their 2015 ranking. The weather held up for the main competition and the drivers were able to give the fans a great showing to start the season..."

Saturday's main competition day, started off dry, but just before the Top 32 match up of #2 qualifier, Ken Gushi's Toyota 86 vs. Faruk Kugay' 2JZ-powered Nissan S14, rain began to fall.  With great control, Ken drove great lead line in the slippery condition and avoided contact in the chase position, when his opponent made contact with the wall.  Ken took the win.

During the Formula Drift Half-time break, the GReddy Team debuted the new Boost Brigade Spring Collection.  It was great to see many fans support the new brand in the stands.  For more info. see the new online store:

www.boostbrigade.com

Luckily as the weather cleared up during the break.  It allowed for a mostly dry exciting competition to the end of the event.  With packed Long Beach grandstands, the 16 brackets saw Ken Gushi advanced pass the VR-powered G37 of Charles Ng, with solid lead and chase runs.

In the Great 8, Ken Gushi went against Forrest Wang's 2JZ-powered Nissan S14.  Similarly to the his 32 battle (except in the dry) Ken laid down a dominate lead pass, building a large gap, which pressured his opponent to make a mistake in the 2nd run. This moved the the GReddy Team onto the Semi Finals.

In the Semi Finals, the GReddy Racing Nexen Tire SR by Toyota 86 of Ken Gushi faced off with the eventual round winner, Chelsea Denofa in his BMW E36.  In one of the most evenly matched battles of the day, (which could have easily went OMT -one more time), the Judges awarded Denofa the win. And with SR by Toyota teammate, Frederic Aasbo taking, second, Gushi was award the final podium spot.

The 3rd place finish in #FDLB, continues the podium streak for the GReddy Racing Team (2015 FDTX & FDIRW) and starts of the 2016 Pro Championship charge for Ken Gushi, while contributing to the SR by Toyota lead for the FD Manufacturer's Cup and Nexen Tires for the lead in the FD Tire Manufacturer's Cup.

The GReddy Racing Team is excited to welcome new 2016 technical partners to the team, Nexen Tires, NGK Spark Plugs, Redline Oil, BC Brian Crower, Takata and the Boost Brigade.

We would also like to thank the continuing technical partners: SR by Toyota, Rays Engineering/Gram Lights, KW Suspension, Wisefab, Wilwood, Rocket Bunny/Pandem, Turbo by Garrett, WPC, Supertech, OS Giken, Ignition Projects, Bluemoon Performance and Tuned by N8

Formula D Rd.1 - Streets of Long Beach

  • Monday Coverage from Formula Drift #FDLB
http://greddy.com/featured/50
The GReddy Racing Team was back on the Streets of Long Beach for the competition debut of the all new 800+hp 2JZ-powered GReddy Performance x Hankook Tire x Scion Racing FR-S.

With back to back Long Beach events starting off the 2012 and 2013 seasons in 8th place, the team had high hopes to better the results and shoot for the team's first podium finish.

In early practice, GReddy driver, Ken Gushi was impressing everyone, with his high speed, smooth transitions, aggressive angle, wide lines and big smoke...  As shown in this instagram video posted by Formula Drift announcer, Jarod Deanda from the Judge's stands

The powerful new engine, chassis and driver performed faultlessly.  Unfortunately being the debut event with this new car, there is still a learning curve to dialing in the car under full range of track conditions and changeable variables.  This lead to a less then ideal Qualifying (77pts.,19th) and Top32 tandem battle (vs. Odi Bakchis)

Rest assured the GReddy Team is already planning for more extensive testing to fully prepared for Rd.2 in Road Atlanta, May 9-10. Thank you for your support!

We also had Mr. Kei Miura of Rocket Bunny supporting the team and offering his Rocket Bunny soft goods in the GReddy Booth and GReddy Online Store.

Round 1 - Streets of Long Beach 2013

Monday Coverage from Formula D season opener:

Pro Drifter Ken Gushi starts off the second season in the newly refreshed GReddy Performance X Scion Racing Drift FR-S with a solid Great 8 finish (out of 53 registered drivers) in the 2013 Formula Drift Pro Championship season opener (62pts)...

With a new Formula D knock-out qualifying process, Ken only got in one qualifying lap.  So the 73.4pt run was good enough to lock in a top 16 spot, of 14th position.

That matched up Ken with Kyle Mohan (19th) in his RX-8 for the Top32 round.  Ken had two clean runs and moved on to the Main Event and the Top 16 round.  In the Top 16, Ken defeated number 3 qualifier, Mike Essa in his new BMW M3.

That set-up a Great 8 match up with Vaughn Gitten in his Ford Mustang, who went on to finish the event in 2nd place.   All in all, not a bad start for the team.  The next round is just around the corner, May 10-11 at Road Atlanta and the GReddy Team already have some more upgrades on the way!      Congratulations to: 1st Dai Yoshihara, 2nd Jr. Gitten, 3rd Chris Forsberg
It was also a great event off the track as well, we had special Guest Kei Miura of the famous TRA Kyoto (Rocket Bunny).  So in the GReddy vendor booth we had a Limited Edition GReddy X Rocket Bunny T-Shirt as well as another new GReddy "Blue Outline" Logo Tshirt.  (We still have some T-shirts left and they can be purchased from our official online store, www.ShopGReddy.com...)
Also in the GReddy booth was Ken Gushi's personal FR-S with a GReddy Tuner Turbo Kit and Ken was signing new Scion Racing Hero card with Shin Tanaka Paper Shapers version of the GReddy Performance X Scion Racing Drift FR-S.
