Kawabata Wins the First FIA Intercontinental Drifting Cup

In the Toyo Tires - Glion - TRUST Racing 35RX Dspec GT-R II

Japanese driver makes history in Tokyo ahead of Tsaregratsev and Saito
Masato Kawabata has won the first ever FIA Intercontinental Drifting Cup, topping the points ranking across the two legs of Solo and Battle competition which have taken place in Tokyo this weekend (30 September – 1 October). Arkady Tsaregratsev secured second place overall for Russia ahead of third-placed Daigo Saito, who also walked away from the event with the cup for overall best in the Solo Run.
The second Leg of the event began this morning with the Solo Run, as drivers ventured out alone to try and score maximum points across the course’s five scored sections.
Scoring in the FIA IDC is carried out by the Judges, who also have at their disposal an electronic device system developed for D1 Grand Prix which provides accurate data to help inform their decisions on each run.

Yesterday’s Solo winner, Saito, was unable to reach the same level as he had previously, scoring in the 98s across both of his runs today leaving him in fifth place. His main rival from Leg 1 and compatriot Kawabata looked to have done enough on his first attempt through the course with 99.70 points, but was handed a two-point penalty for going out of bounds which demoted him to fourth place.
This meant three new drivers would reach the podium for their Solo Run efforts. Thai driver Daychapon Toyingcharoen almost broke the 99-point barrier with a 98.96 in his second run to secure third place behind Russian ace Arkady Tsaregratsev who impressed with a 99.21 in his opening gambit.
Victory, though, went to Japan’s Masashi Yokoi, who just did enough in his second run to top the table by a tiny margin of 0.13 points.
Despite not scoring a podium today, Saito’s stunning performance yesterday and a solid Sunday showing was enough to take victory in the overall FIA Intercontinental Drifting Cup for Solo Run.
The top 16 scorers from the morning’s action were then paired off for the final phase of the event – the Battle Run.
The afternoon session provided plenty of drama as 16 of the world’s top drifting talents competed inches apart in a bid to secure a place in the final. Like yesterday, there ended up being an all-Japanese and an all-Russian semi-final. The Russian run certainly brought excitement to a fever pitch, as Tsaregratsev and Georgy Chivchyan ended up level on points, forcing a tie-breaker. The pair’s second battle was incredibly close, and under the huge pressure of the chasing Tsaregratsev, Chivchyan made slight contact with the wall and lost his rear wing, along with a chance of being in the final.
The #19 driver would, however, win his third-place playoff Battle with earlier Solo winner Yokoi, ensuring he had a place on the podium at the end of the day.
This left Tsaregratsev and Kawabata in the Leg 2 finale, and there was still more excitement to come before the overall winner of the FIA IDC was decided. In the first run, with Kawabata leading, there was almost nothing to separate the two top drifting talents, however in the second run, Leg 1 winner Kawabata pushed too hard entering the third scored section of the track and ended up overtaking his rival.
This error meant that the delighted Tsaregratsev claimed victory in the Leg 2 Battle Run.
With the scores for each Run across both Legs tallied up, it was clear that Kawabata, despite not quite scoring a win today, was the top driver over the weekend. He was ten points ahead of Tsaregratsev, whose strong Sunday performance ensured a place on the final podium for him, while Saito was a further seven points behind.

Nissan Middle East FZE has sped into the record books after extremely brave driver Masato Kawabata (Japan) achieved the Fastest vehicle drift ever at a staggering 304.96 km/h (189.49 mi/h), while driving a Nissan GT-R Nismo during an event at Fujairah International Airport, UAE, last month.

The drift champion broke the Guinness World Records title three times at 273.39, 304.96 and 296.79 km/h with an angulation of 55.21°, 33.56° and 34.42° respectively, traveling down the 3 km long airstrip.

Kawabata and Nissan significantly bettered the previous record of 217.973 km/h (135.44 mi/h) which was achieved by Jakub Przygonski (Poland) at Biala Podlaska Airport near Warsaw, Poland, in 2013.

Not the first time this vehicle has entered the record books, a Nissan GT-R achieved an acceleration of 0–60 mph (0–100 km) in 3.5 seconds while completing a lap of the Nürburgring circuit in Nürburg, Germany in 2008, to earn the Guinness World Records title Fastest 0-60mph acceleration by a four seater production car.

2015 GReddy Year in Review

Time to Catch up with GReddy...

2016 is gearing up to be another great year for GReddy, with more new products, projects and fun; let's take a quick look back at some of the accomplishments we achieved in 2015...

Most recently was the secret Toyo Tires Japan Drift Attack project on the infamous Hakone Turn Pike, during the latest Motor Head Magazine Hakone Hill Climb II. The video session brought together our very own Boost Briagde / GReddy Team of Ken Gushi and Masato Kawabata in the TRUST Racing / Toyo Tires 550hp Toyota 86 and 1000+hp Nissan GT-R

At the SEMA Show, GReddy Special Projects Division's 2015 project build was for the Fast and the Furious series star, Sung Kang (Han).  This special 1973 Datsun 240Z build, named the "Fugu Z," was documented online in Z Dream a 5 episode series, by the Speed motors on Fox and the eGarage team.

Built in just over 2 months, this special build was finished just in time to reveal before the SEMA Show at the GReddy HQ.  It then went on to be featured in the main lobby of SEMA Show and won "Best in Show" in the Gran Turismo Awards (and our 4th Best Asian Import Award)

The GReddy Racing Japanese and USA Teams were equally as successful in 2015 with a D1 Grand Prix Series Championship and a 2nd Overall in the, super competitive, Formula Drift Pro Championships...

In just his 2nd year in the Team TOYO TIRES Drift - TRUST Racing 35RX Dspec GT-R, Masato Kawabata captures his 3rd D1Grand Prix Series Championship, with 2x wins (4x podioums) & 1x Top Qualifier in the 5 round, 2015 season.  (plus 3x 2015 Exhibition Event Wins)

2015 also became a break-out season for Ken Gushi and the GReddy Performance - Scion Racing FR-S.   In Ken's 4th season with the GReddy Team, Ken produced an impressive 4x podiums, 2x Top Qualifiers as well as record for OMTs in one event in the 7round series.  The result for the 2015 Formula Drift Pro Championship was 2nd overall with no signs of slowing down for 2016... Ken's 2nd place finish at the season finale in Irwindale Speedway with an injured car showed his confidence and great driving skill.

Formula Drift Japan with the GReddy FR-S & GT-R

  • GReddy coverage from FD Japan, with Ken Gushi and Masato Kawabata.
 Kawabata gets a Top4 Finish!
Not ready to end our 2014 Formula Drift season, the GReddy Team decided to ship our GReddy Performance x Hankook Tire x Scion Racing FR-S to Okayama Japan for Ken Gushi to compete in the 2nd Japanese round of the Formula Drift Asia series.

Joining the USA team to compete in FD Japan was none other then 2x D1GP Champion, Masato Kawabata.  And in his debut FD event, Kawabata achieves a 4th place finish with the Team Toyo Tires Drift x TRUST Racing 35RX Dspec GT-R!

The overseas trip saw the GReddy FR-S land at our TRUST/GReddy HQ in Chiba just days before the event.  From there the GReddy Team transported the two race cars 10hrs south-west to a very cold Okayama International Circuit for the Formula Drift Japan / Motor Games event.

The Okayama course was a long challenging high speed course with many crucial turns.  But it was the 1st sweeper that would prove to the key point in the track in tandem battles with the unpredictable cold weather conditions.

Friday Qualifying had Gushi and Kawabata in 22nd and 24th respectively.  Ken performed well under pressure in his Q2 run, after an over aggressive bobble in his first qualifying pass.  Kawabata was still feeling out the Judging requirements for his first Formula Drift event.

Saturday, Ken Gushi's Top32 battle (1:55.50) was with Japan's Tomokazu Hirota's JDM 4door. Although Ken had a dominate lead run, it was not enough to overcome the off line bobble from getting too close to Hirota in the first sweeper of his chase run.  For Top32 (0:38.00) Masato Kawabata received a bye run against Tetsuya Hibino to move on.  http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2ciari_formula-drift-japan-okayama-top-32_auto

The next round for the GReddy Team was a battle of the 2013 and 2014 D1GP Champions. Sweet16-  Masato Kawabata vs. Kuniaki "Kuni" Takahashi   This was a great pair of battles, but it was Kawabata that was able to gain better proximity in the chase position for the clear win.

In the FD Japan Great8, Kawabata went up against the event's #1 Qualifier, Tstomu Fujio in a R34 Skyline.  Again Kawabata showed great skill following behind Fujio, eventually forcing some errors and moving the GReddy Team onto the next bracket.

In his first Formula Drift event, Masato Kawabata drives the Team Toyo Tires Drift x TRUST Racing 35RX GT-R into the Final4 against another FD/D1 Champion, Diago Saito.  Race scouting showed Saito's new JZX100 Chaser to be one of the fastest cars of the event.  This motivates Kawabata to go for more speed.  In the end he pushes a little too hard in the crucial first sweeper and moves Saito into the Finals.  All in all it was a very challenging and exciting event for both GReddy Teams... we look forward to what the 2015 race season brings.

Congratulations to the FD Japan Okayama Event finalist:
1st - Masashi Yokoi
2nd - Daigo Saito,
3rd -  Fredric Aasbo (& new FD Asia Champion)
4th - Masato Kawabata
