Inspired by the Skills of Professional Drift Drivers, Research Seeks to Combine the Technology of Vehicle Automation with Artificial Intelligence Algorithms
What if every driver who ran into trouble had the instinctive reflexes of a professional race car driver and the calculated foresight of a supercomputer to avoid a crash?
Toyota Newsroom Press Release;
LOS ALTOS, Calif., (January 14, 2021) – What if every driver who ran into trouble had the instinctive reflexes of a professional race car driver and the calculated foresight of a supercomputer to avoid a crash? Researchers at Toyota Research Institute are working with Stanford’s Dynamic Design Lab to make this vision come true.
The engineers are conducting research into how to bring together the instincts of professional drivers and automated driving technology. Their goal is to design a new level of active safety technology and share it broadly so that Toyota and other auto manufacturers can deploy it on the road.
“Every day, there are deadly vehicle crashes that result from extreme situations where most drivers would need superhuman skills to avoid a collision,” said Gill Pratt, TRI CEO and Chief Scientist at Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC). “The reality is that every driver has vulnerabilities, and to avoid a crash, drivers often need to make maneuvers that are beyond their abilities. Through this project, TRI will learn from some of the most skilled drivers in the world to develop sophisticated control algorithms that amplify human driving abilities and keep people safe. This is the essence of the Toyota Guardian™ approach.”
Every year, car crashes result in nearly 40,000 fatalities in the United States, and about 1.25 million fatalities worldwide. Toyota’s goal is to reduce that number to zero. While most crashes occur in mundane situations, in other situations drivers may need to make maneuvers that take their vehicle close to and, at times, exceed normal limits of handling. When faced with wet or slippery roads for instance, professional drivers may choose to ‘drift’ the car through a turn.
“Since 2008, our lab has taken inspiration from human race car drivers in designing algorithms that enable automated vehicles to handle the most challenging emergencies,” said Professor Chris Gerdes of Stanford University’s Dynamic Design Laboratory. “Through this research, we have the opportunity to move these ideas much closer to saving lives on the road.”
TRI has supported the Dynamic Design Lab’s research for many years. The current project draws upon Stanford’s published paper, “Opening New Dimensions: Vehicle Motion Planning and Control using Brakes while Drifting,” in which Stanford researchers demonstrated advanced drifting on MARTY, an electrified, automated DeLorean. Stanford’s experimental results produced a proof-of-concept architecture capable of controlling a rear-wheel drive vehicle in a drift using brakes, steering and propulsion. TRI is now applying this architecture to vehicle platforms, including the GR Supra.
TRI is also engaging Toyota’s engineering expertise in motorsports and advanced development. Toyota Racing Development (TRD U.S.A., Inc.) in the United States is providing valuable technical and experiential know-how in motorsports and drifting. Separately, TRI is also working with Toyota Motor Corporation’s Vehicle Dynamics Control Team — based in Japan — to apply the drifting architecture for future Toyota vehicles.
Like you, the GReddy Performance Products Team look forward each year to the annual SEMA Show to debut and display our new products, applications and project vehicles. Unfortunately with the cancellation of this year’s show that option is not possible. However, we have been preparing for this scenario, and we are excited to share our exhibits with a worldwide audience in the form of GPP Live 2020, a new Virtual Online Event!
Join us and our media partners, October 28-30 for a series of live online broadcasts throughout the three days. We will be showcasing the latest and existing GReddy / GPP products, feature vehicles, interview special guests and have a Q&A with GPP Staff.

“I am beyond excited to introduce to everyone our new Toyota Gazoo Racing GR Supra that we will be campaigning for the 2020 Formula Drift season. The Supra is an iconic name in the import car scene and I couldn’t be any happier to be given the opportunity to pilot such a legendary brand. I will miss driving the 86 as that car will always have a special place in my heart. With the help of our new and existing partners, I believe we have built the ultimate drifting machine. “
The build took place at Greddy Performance HQ in Irvine CA. The team took delivery of the GR Supra late December of 2019 and wasted no time in stripping down the car for chassis and roll cage prep. Our goal as a team was to take everything we learned with the 86 platform, and apply it to the GR Supra.
Starting with the B58 engine program, we worked closely with Bluemoon Performance out of Costa
Mesa to build a powerful, yet reliable engine using parts and components from our partners over at
RunBC, Supertech Performance, JE Pistons, and Motul USA. These brands have been a key
component with the success we had through our 86 campaign. Powered by a BorgWarner EFR 9280,
the B58 straight-6 will propel the GR Supra running on Achilles Radial 123S tires, which brought the
team huge success and performance in 2019.
“I am confident this GR Supra will be a great successor to our faithful 86 that brought us a win at
Irwindale last season. I already know this car has huge potential and I can’t wait to show you guys
what it’s all about” says Ken.

This high-skilled, high-powered motor sport where drivers intentionally maneuver their cars into well executed, controlled sideways slides at high speeds through a marked course, has professional drivers & teams competing in eight championship competitions in 2020.
Round One of the 2020 season will now take place at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta on July 3-4,
which is reminiscent of the first season of Formula DRIFT in 2004, which kicked off of at the same
track.

* Now with removable GReddy -10 AN M18xP1.5 Inlet / Outlet Fittings
You will begin to notice that there is a slight change in some of those icon blue GReddy oil cooler cores found in our universal and application-specific GReddy Oil Coolers Kits. The oil cooler core's AN inlet and outlet on all new newly manufactured GReddy Oil Coolers and Oil Cooler Kits may now have updated with removable (GReddy p/n 12005103, same fitting commonly found on GREX Oil Block Adapters) -10 AN gold O-ringed-M18 x P1.5 fittings as a "running change" (no change to part numbers).
The core continue to have our proprietary "inner fin" cooling technology and are still available in 10, 13 and 16 row sizes.
- This also means the inlet and/or outlet -10 AN fitting can be changed to optional -8 AN p/n 12005110 or -12 AN 12005112 fittings.
figure 1.
Although there is a slight (+7mm) change in overall height because of the removable fittings, existing kits will be adapted (if necessary.) figure 1.
This core and fitting update will also apply to all new GReddy standard, circuit spec and filter relocation Oil Cooler kits...
The EVOlution GT for the Infiniti Q50 2wd. Sedan is the ideal combination of form and function. The dual cat-back exhaust utilizes an exhaust-pressure-equalizing 2.5” X-pipe crossover and large dual resonators to tune the exhaust sound of the twin turbo VR30DDTT engine. Large 3” diameter dual EVO muffler canisters are aggressively angled to purposely minimize unnecessary bends and increase flow. Dual GReddy 4.5” single-wall slash tips finish off the system under the factory bumper cut-outs.
