GReddy to support the Scion Racing Mackin Industuries FR-S

For the past 3 years the GReddy Racing Team has challenged the infamous Pikes Peak International Hill Climb2014 with Ken Gushi and the GReddy Racing FR-S, and 2013-12 with Takeshi Aizawa in the GReddy tC2.

The PPIHC is America's 2nd oldest race. And this epic high altitude competition only takes place once a year, when the full 12.42 mile course is open to race on it's 156 treacherous turns.  Our racing team will be in New Jersey for Formula D Round 4. With our commitment to the Formula Drift schedule, we will be unable to field our own challenger in the hill climb, but we are proud to lend our experience and support to our Scion Racing teammates, with the Scion Racing - Mackin Industries FR-S (supported by Evasive Motorsports) in the Time Attack 1 category.

Success at Pikes Peak for Ken Gushi and the GReddy Team

    Personal Best 10:30.188!

As part of the Scion Racing contingent, Ken Gushi climbs to the infamous Pikes Peak 14,115ft summit in a super quick 10 minute and 30.188 seconds with an average speed of 68.551mph and claims 3rd place (17th overall, out of 130racers) in the tough 18-car field of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Time Attack 1 division (just behind two heavily modified 911 Cup race cars).

The Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is the second oldest race in America and is respected worldwide.  It is not only difficult because of the dangerous blind corners and deadly cliffs, but the unusual nature of the race.  The full 152 turn course is actually a public road that is only opened up to be raced once a year and competitors get just one chance to clock a time over the 4,720ft climb.   Thats not to say, it's a one day race.  Their is also a grueling week of 3:00am set-ups and practices on each sections of the course.

2014 was the GReddy Racing Team's 3rd assault with Scion Racing, but the first with our revised Drift FR-S ver1.5, lucky number #86. (our two previous races were with our GReddy Turbo tC and our now 2014 crew-chief, Takeshi Aizawa)  It is also Ken's third consecutive race up the mountain (the past two years, he was driving the famous Lexus CCSR)  The combination of Ken Gushi and the GReddy Performance x Hankook Tire x Scion Racing FR-S proved to be great combination, netting both Ken and GReddy our fastest time yet.  [see how we converted our 2012-13 Formula Drift FR-S from Drift-spec to Hill Climb Spec...

Converting our 2012-13 pro Drift FR-S over to a hill climb spec didn't go off without it's share adjustments that had to be overcome.  The result was the car had to miss out on the lower section practice and qualifying day.  This meant the Ken would have to run at the very end of the event.  Luckily for the Team, when Ken did get to leave the starting line after 4:00pm MT, he was experienced enough put together a good run with an aggressive top section run.  Sector 1 - 1:55.961, Sector 2 - 2.33.575, Sector 3 - 3:01.889 and Sector 4 - 2.58.763!

Revised GReddy Racing FR-S Ver1.5 for Pikes Peak

Best known as a top drifting competitor, Gushi won the 2013 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Exhibition Auto Class driving a Lexus ISF CCS-R. This year he’ll drive a 2013 FR-S in the Time Attack 1 Division for production-based two- and four-wheel drive vehicles. This is the second appearance of the FR-S at the event.
“No race on earth is quite like the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, and I can’t wait to conquer it in a car I love: the Scion FR-S,” Gushi said. “Every turn of this course requires the best performance out of the driver and vehicle, and racing fans will love what they see.”

The 12.42-mile race in the Colorado Rocky Mountains finishes at the 14,115-foot summit, where drivers and vehicles contend with thin air and high winds. To prepare for the course, the GReddy Racing team has retuned the suspension of the FR-S race car and added new performance and safety components. As modified, the engine produces 500 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque.

“The highly competitive Pikes Peak International Hill Climb will showcase Ken Gushi’s renowned racing skills and the enhanced performance capabilities of the FR-S,” said Landy Joe, Scion auto shows and special events manager. “Scion Racing is thrilled to compete in this iconic event again this year and let our fans experience a ‘Race to the Clouds’ with the FR-S.”

GReddy Pikes Peak Hill Climb Coverage

zWith back to back race weeks for Formula D New Jersey and the historic Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, the GReddy Racing / Scion Racing Teams were very busy in June.

Flying into Colorado Springs directly from NJ, the team change from Drift mode to Time Attack modeTakeshi Aizawa, Ken Gushi's FormulaD spotter also changed rolls to GReddy tC Time Attack race driver once again.

see the Scion Racing's 2013 PPIHC Photo Album

2013 would be the Team's 2nd year competing with the Scion Racing at Pikes Peak on the 12.42 mile course.  Weather conditions were good throughout the week's practice/qualifying sessions. And the GReddy crew was more familiar and prepared for the grueling week of 3:00am set-ups, high altitude, and long hours on the mountain.  Driver Takeshi was also noticeably faster and more comfortable on each of the three practice sectors of the dangerous Pikes Peak course.

Photo from Top Gear
Takeshi in the GReddy / Scion Racing tC qualified 8th out of 21 cars in the Time Attack division with a 4:45.356 over the lower section from the starting line to Glen Cove.  This was the quickest front-wheel-drive time in the class, barely ahead of team-mate ACP in the Rally xD  with a 4:45.605.

With a time of 12:08.606 in the 2012 Exhibition class for Takeshi's rookie year and the Team predicted and targeted a low to mid 11minute time for this 91st running of the Pike's Peak Hill Climb, baring any big mistakes, breaks or adverse weather conditions.  But the true test always comes on race day, when you finally get one run up the entire course.

Autoblog.com
That being said, when the actual race day came on Sunday, June 30th and it was time for Takeshi to make his official timed run over the complete 156 turn course, it began to rain, hail and snow on different parts of the mountain. And that is what makes the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb such a challenge - Driver, Car and the Mountain.

Although it was sunny at the starting line, by the time Takeshi reached the infamous "Engineer's Corner" (less then half way through the lower sector) it was pouring rain.  Then by "Glen Cove" there was hail and towards the top sector it was snowing!  But with great skill, Takeshi and the GReddy / Scion Racing tC made it up safely up to the 14,110ft summit in a respectable 13:20.045 in severe weather conditions.  Takeshi and the entire GReddy Team is very proud and honored to have competed and completed this historic and challenging race again with the Scion Racing!

We are also happy to report all of our fellow PPIHC Scion Racing Teams were also successful in making it to the summit of Pikes Peak.  Veteran driver ACP really showed his rally experience, piloting the GReddy-Turbocharged Scion Racing RallyxD in similar severe weather conditions to an impressive 12:55.739, while rookie Pikes Peak driver Robert Walker drove an excellent race to the summit in the Scion Racing / Evasive Motorsports FR-S in just 10:59.744 in the Unlimited Class with good weather, earlier in the day.

Rockit West Mediaworks
And on a full wet course later in the day with even worst weather, our very own Formula D drift driver, Ken Gushi showed a dominating Exhibition class winning 12:03.085 in the famous Lexus CCS-R IS-F (who in good weather conditions might have even been able to make in the 9minutes.)

Congratulations to the record smashing (8:13.878) Sebastien Loeb in the amazing Peugeot 208 T16 and to all the other 2013 Pikes Peak Teams, we hope to join you again in the future...
