GReddy Pikes Peak Hill Climb Coverage

zWith back to back race weeks for Formula D New Jersey and the historic Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, the GReddy Racing / Scion Racing Teams were very busy in June.

Flying into Colorado Springs directly from NJ, the team change from Drift mode to Time Attack modeTakeshi Aizawa, Ken Gushi's FormulaD spotter also changed rolls to GReddy tC Time Attack race driver once again.

see the Scion Racing's 2013 PPIHC Photo Album

2013 would be the Team's 2nd year competing with the Scion Racing at Pikes Peak on the 12.42 mile course.  Weather conditions were good throughout the week's practice/qualifying sessions. And the GReddy crew was more familiar and prepared for the grueling week of 3:00am set-ups, high altitude, and long hours on the mountain.  Driver Takeshi was also noticeably faster and more comfortable on each of the three practice sectors of the dangerous Pikes Peak course.

Takeshi in the GReddy / Scion Racing tC qualified 8th out of 21 cars in the Time Attack division with a 4:45.356 over the lower section from the starting line to Glen Cove.  This was the quickest front-wheel-drive time in the class, barely ahead of team-mate ACP in the Rally xD  with a 4:45.605.

With a time of 12:08.606 in the 2012 Exhibition class for Takeshi's rookie year and the Team predicted and targeted a low to mid 11minute time for this 91st running of the Pike's Peak Hill Climb, baring any big mistakes, breaks or adverse weather conditions.  But the true test always comes on race day, when you finally get one run up the entire course.

Autoblog.com
That being said, when the actual race day came on Sunday, June 30th and it was time for Takeshi to make his official timed run over the complete 156 turn course, it began to rain, hail and snow on different parts of the mountain. And that is what makes the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb such a challenge - Driver, Car and the Mountain.

Although it was sunny at the starting line, by the time Takeshi reached the infamous "Engineer's Corner" (less then half way through the lower sector) it was pouring rain.  Then by "Glen Cove" there was hail and towards the top sector it was snowing!  But with great skill, Takeshi and the GReddy / Scion Racing tC made it up safely up to the 14,110ft summit in a respectable 13:20.045 in severe weather conditions.  Takeshi and the entire GReddy Team is very proud and honored to have competed and completed this historic and challenging race again with the Scion Racing!

We are also happy to report all of our fellow PPIHC Scion Racing Teams were also successful in making it to the summit of Pikes Peak.  Veteran driver ACP really showed his rally experience, piloting the GReddy-Turbocharged Scion Racing RallyxD in similar severe weather conditions to an impressive 12:55.739, while rookie Pikes Peak driver Robert Walker drove an excellent race to the summit in the Scion Racing / Evasive Motorsports FR-S in just 10:59.744 in the Unlimited Class with good weather, earlier in the day.

And on a full wet course later in the day with even worst weather, our very own Formula D drift driver, Ken Gushi showed a dominating Exhibition class winning 12:03.085 in the famous Lexus CCS-R IS-F (who in good weather conditions might have even been able to make in the 9minutes.)

Congratulations to the record smashing (8:13.878) Sebastien Loeb in the amazing Peugeot 208 T16 and to all the other 2013 Pikes Peak Teams, we hope to join you again in the future...

GReddy Racing Team fun

Here is some raw car to car, GoPro video footage of Takeshi in our GReddy Time-Attack tC chasing Ken in the GReddy X Scion Racing Drift FR-S around the "Streets of Willow" at the 2012 Scion Racing Trackday.

This was filmed a few weeks after the tC returned for the Pike's Peak International Hill Climb and just 2days after the Drift FR-S' firery battles at Formula D, Las Vegas.

The next competition for the GReddy X Scion Racing Drift FR-S is Oct. 12-13 at the "House of Drift," Irwindale Speedway, for the 2012 Formula Drift Rd.7, season finale...

GReddy X Scion Racing tC at Pike's Peak Int'l Hill Climb

As part of a two car Scion Racing effort at this year's 90th running of the famous Pike's Peak International Hill Climb, the GReddy X Scion Racing turbo tC challenged the Exhibition class in the "Race into the Clouds."

The Aug 12th, 2012 PPIHC was the GReddy X Scion Racing tC & Takeshi Aizawa's 1st time running of the full course.  Takeshi (a GReddy R&D technician and Ken Gushi's Formula D spotter/mechanic) joined the more experienced Andrew Comrie-Picard ACP in the tramac-spec, GReddy turbo'ed Sparco RallyxD and Ken Gushi in the Lexus CCS-R in successful run up the 14,110ft high, 12.42mile course.
Takeshi got faster and faster every time in the car, especially towards the top of the hill.  Finishing the course in a respectable 12:08.60.  Look for more photos and video coming soon from the Scion Racing team.

Pike's Peak story by ScionOwners.com

GReddy Performance x Scion Racing Turbo tC2 (Video)

Greddy Performance x Scion Racing Turbo tC2
When GReddy built a 2011 Scion tC for the SEMA show in November 2010, it was just the beginning. At the time there were no plans to continue the car into a racing program – but when GReddy recognized the potential of the tC platform that's just what they did.

GReddy's goal was to keep the tC a "street-able track car" that could be replicated by any Scion Owner. In building it, the GReddy team used products available for purchase as much as possible, alongside some R&D components.

When racing, this car is in the hands of driver Takeshi Aizawa. Takeshi just happens to be one of the GReddy R&D masterminds as well as Ken Gushi's spotter during Formula D events with the GReddy FR-S. During the 2011 Time Attack Season, the team took home 1 win and multiple 2nds. This year they've continued with the Redline Time Attack events and have added another challenge, Pike's Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC).

Not only does the grueling 156 turns of the PPIHC take utmost driver skill, it also takes a car that can endure the 4,720 foot climb in a mere 12.42 miles – resulting in a 30% power drop at the top due to thin air. To prepare for this race, the only major change was a new weld in roll cage and some other safety features along with Hankook Z221 Tires (265/35/R18). The GReddy tC has shown so far it's success as a street-able racing platform, and with the GReddy race team we know it will make us proud at the PPIHC.

Formula D New Jersey Coverage

with the GReddy Performance X Scion Racing Drift FR-S & Ken Gushi

After Round 4 of the Formula Drift season, Ken Gushi and the GReddy X Scion Racing Team move up in the rankings from 14 to 12th in the Championships.

The New Jersey Wall Speedway track matched up well with Ken's aggressive driving lines and the drift FR-S' lightweight agility. This brought the Team it's highest Qualifying position of 9th place, to start Saturday's main event.  (After an close call with the Wall Speedway banked guardrail, in Ken's 1st Qualifying run in the wet, on Friday, the 2nd Qualifying run in dry conditions, had high Ken placing the Drift FR-S high on the bank for a solid score.)

In Saturday morning's 32 brackets, the GReddy team defeated Pat Mordaunt in his Apexi Lexus.  This sent the Ken to battle against fellow Hankook Tire teammate and last year's event winner, Conrad Grunewald, in his Camero.  Ken's driving and line looked great on the 1st "chase" run, but a misjudgement on the 2nd "lead" run, with an early transition ended the day early in the Top16.

Congratulations to FD Rd.4 Winners
    1st - Vaughn Gitten     2nd - Daijiro Yoshihara     3rd - Chris Forsberg

All in all, the GReddy X Scion Racing Drift FR-S preformed flawlessly and the Team had a great time with the fans of the Tri-State area.  We are really looking forward to the next Round, at the Evergreen Speedway in Washington, July 20-21.

--------------------------------------

But before then, the Team will be "Racing to the Clouds" for the 90th running of the famous Pike's Peak International Hill Climb in the GReddy X Scion Racing turbo tC on Hankook Tires, with Ken's race spotter, and GReddy tC driver Takeshi Aizawa.
