GReddy Event Coverage from Formula Drift FDSEA 2016

Ken Gushi podiums round 6 of the Formula Drift Pro Championships.  The Seattle event at Evergreen Speedway and currently sits 5th in the championship, with 2 rounds to go...

After struggling with mechanical issues in the previous Canadian round, the GReddy Racing Team worked furiously on updates to bring a stronger, faster, more powerful GReddy Racing - Nexen Tires - SR by Toyota 86 to closeout the final 3 west coast events.

The improvements paid off with a solid Thursday practice and a 6th place qualifying position on Friday.   Ken drove two super smooth runs for scores of 86 and 89pts.  Further fine tuning in the Top32 practice lead to a very competitive package for the #FDSEA tandem eliminations.

In Top32, Ken was matched up against the #27 qualifier, privater, Jeff Jones in his LS-powered S14.  Ken showed a dominate performance to advance to the next round.

After the Formula Drift half-time break, Ken Gushi's 16 bracket battle was against, Boost Brigade teammate, Robbie Nishida in his twin-turbo VQ-powered G37.  Being good friends and knowing each other's driving style well, Ken gave Robbie an amazingly close chase run, that exited the crowd.   This along with a solid lead run gave Ken the win.
(Click here to see a reply of this 16 bracket battle)

Great8 battle(s) became quite complicated, Ken was almost ready for a solo bye run after his opponent, Tyler McQuarrie and his V8powered Camero suffered a crash in his 16 battle.  But with the unusual amount of OMT battles, that night, the car was able to be repaired enough to run against Ken.  Surprisingly, Ken made a mistake while pulling a large gap on McQuarrie, which sent the Judges to request an OMT battle.  Although the OMT battles were closer, Ken came out with the win for his 3rd Semi Finals of the year.

The FDSEA Semi-Finals, was down to 4,  Coffman vs. Forsberg and Bakchis vs. Gushi.   As you can see in the reply below, Ken might have gave Odi too much of a gap on the bank, but he closed the gap for a very competitive chase run.  While leading, Ken drove another solid run with great line and angle.  Bakchis' V8 Genesis also had a close chase run, but seemed to have a big correction at the end of the track.  It looked to be very close and could have possibly gone to a OMT, but in the end the Judges went with Odi.

As per Formula Drift rules, the higher qualifying driver, receives 3rd place, placing Ken on the  podium for the 2nd time this season...  Congratulations to 1st place - Bakchis and 2nd place - Forsberg.

With only two rounds to go,  FDTX in the Texas Motor Speedway on Sept 9-10 and FDIRW finale in the Irwindale Speedway on Oct 7-8,  the GReddy Team will push extra hard for that top step on the podium!

GReddy Event Coverage from Formula Drift Rd.5

Ken Gushi and the GReddy Performance x Hankook Tire x Scion Racing FR-S maintain 4th place in the 2015 Formula Drift Pro Championships, making up a few points over 2-3place contenders.

(Offer Ends July 28th)

Leading up to Round 5 in the Pacific North West, Ken took over the FormulaD instagram to show some of the team's preparations for the Seattle event.   #gushitakeover

Ken also introduced a limited edition Ken Gushi x Formula D collaboration T-shirt and Hoodie.

At Evergreen Speedway the refreshed GReddy Racing FR-S was strong right off the trailer for Thursday's open practice.

The GReddy Team also got a visit from a special guest, Fast and Furious star, Sung Kang (AKA Han)

However when Friday came, so did the wet weather.  On a very difficult dry/wet track Ken, scored the second highest in Qualifying run 1.  He also scored even better in a dry Qualifying run 2, securing the 4th position in the Top32 Tandem brackets.

In Top32, Ken easily moved passed the Wicknick's 2JZ powered S13. And it was beginning shape up to be a golden opportunity with the number 1 and 2 FD championship points leaders going out early in the Top32 bracket.

Ken and our GReddy model, theVivs, meet many fans from the Pacific North West during the FD half-time break.

The Top16 match up was against McQuarrie's Gopro Camero.  Although it was a close match, a small technical difficulty meant the car was not at it's normal 100%.  Gushi ran hard anyways, but was eliminated earlier than we had all hoped.
The final result was 10th.

Next event will be at the Texas Motorspeedway on Aug. 21-22

Formula D Rd.5 - Evergreen Speedway, WA

Another Great 8 Finish for Ken Gushi and the GReddy Performance x Hankook Tire x Scion Racing FR-S in 2014, helps push Scion into the lead for the Formula Drift OEM Manufacture's Championship. Hankook also leads in the FD Tire Manufacture's Championship.

The GReddy - Turbo by Garrett 2JZ-powered FR-S makes great power, but getting all that power to the ground effectively has been a challenging task.  After some tough rounds on the east coast, it has been great to have the FR-S back in the GReddy garage for preparation of the last 3 rounds...

The Seattle tandems of #FDSEA was a good milestone for our progress.  It also introduced a unique starting line chicane for the lead car to keep the cars closer together, entering the first turn.  In Top32 Ken was matched up against the V8 Camaro of Tyler McQuarrie.  After some good pressure on the Ken's following run, the Camaro ended up going off course and advancing the FR-S into the main event 16-car bracket.

In Top16, the similarly match cars of Gushi and Tureck, made for some of the most exciting battles of the weekend.  The runs between the pair of 2JZ-powered FR-S was too difficult for the judges to declare a winner, so a OMT (One More Time) call was made to have them battle it out again.  These runs were even closer.  Eventually, Ken came out with the Win, moving him on to face the current championship leading contender, Chris Forsberg.

In the Great8, Ken followed close to Forsberg in the V8-powered 370Z in the first run, but a small technical issue in the second run prevented Ken from challenging for semi-finals.  Sometimes luck also plays a big factor in professional drifting.  All in all, Seattle was a positive step in the team's progression.

Next up #FDTX at Texas Motorspeedway on Sept.12-13.

Formula D Round 5 - Evergreen Speedway, WA

   - Monday Coverage from Formula Drift #FDSEA : Seattle, WA

Over the weekend the GReddy Performance X Scion Racing Team competed in the North-West, near Seattle at the Evergreen Speedway for round 5 of the Formula Drift Pro Championships...

If you are familiar with the current Formula D qualifying process. The first round of Qualifying scores lock the top 16 cars into the top 16 positions, then the rest of field (17-on) make a second run to determine the rest of the field.  So with Ken Gushi getting a surprisingly lower then expected 77.5pt for 16 spot, we end up with a tough elimination bracket.  The highest scoring driver (89pt.) in the second round of qualifying for Top32  (who is usually a top driver that just made a mistake in the 1st run) followed by the Number One qualifier (97.5pt) from the first qualifying session in Main 16 eliminations bracket. So this was the situation for round 5...

In the morning Top32 eliminations, driver Ken Gushi drove hard against the #17 Qualifier, Denofa, in his turbocharged straight 6 BMW to take a close win, advancing him to the Main event and Opening ceremony festivities.

After some frantic repairs over the "half time break" Ken was back in the FR-S for Opening Ceremonies and the Main 16 Eliminations, against #1 Qualifier, McNamara in his V8 powered S14 Silvia.  Knowing it would be a fierce battle of high speed drifting, Ken drove hard but came into the infield section a little too "hot," knocking down a "Zero point" cone to end his chances to continue on.

We would like to thank all the fans and partners for their support.

Formula D Seattle Coverage - Semi Final Finish

The GReddy Performance X Scion Racing Drift FR-S advances to the Final 4

In only the Team's 5th Formula D event with the new FR-S, Ken Gushi drove at a consistent high level all weekend.  The result, a best yet, finish of 4th place on the high-speed Evergreen Speedway track.   The Team was so close to picking up a podium finish in Seattle.

The Final 4 finish places the team in 11th place in the Formula Drift Championships with two rounds to go in in the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Aug 24-25 and Irwindale Speedway, Oct 12-13.

Solid qualifying runs by Ken Gushi on a dry track scored a 81 and 83, placing the drift FR-S in 14th position for the tandem brackets.

Top 32 eliminations, was a rematch from Rd.3 Florida, with Kenneth Moen in is 350Z, this time with Ken taking the clear win.

After the half-time break and main event introduction ceremonies, Ken Gushi advanced pass Japanese driver, Toshiki Yoshioka, in his S15.  Setting up another rematch with fellow Hankook tire teammate in the Great 8.  With a good pressure, Conrad Grunewald ended up spinning his Camaro and handing over the win.

That left the nimble-handling GReddy X Scion Racing Drift FR-S as the sole 4 cylinder turbo car in the field.  In the Semi Finals, Ken faced off against, 5th in the championship, Ryan Tuerck in S13, but was not able to defeat this V8 this time.

The final run of the night for us, was a super exciting "door to door" follow run by Ken against Rhys Millen in the consolation round.  This run best exemplified the progress the Ken Gushi and Team have made with the FR-S.   The Team is proud of this weekend's result, and will try our best to keep improving...

Congratulations to FD Rd.5 Winners
1st - Vaughn Gittin    2nd - Ryan Tuerck     3rd - Rhys Millen
