Feb.2022, Toyota Research Institute (TRI) demonstrated a new research milestone in autonomy, providing a glimpse into the future of safer mobility for all.

As revealed in this video, TRI researchers successfully programmed a vehicle to autonomously drift around obstacles on a closed track - a world first. Combining a deep knowledge of both vehicle dynamics and control design, TRI’s Nonlinear Model Predictive Control (NMPC) approach extends the vehicle’s operational domain to the very limits of its performance. The idea behind this research is to utilize controlled, autonomous drifting to avoid accidents by navigating sudden obstacles or hazardous road conditions like black ice. 


“At TRI, our goal is to use advanced technologies that augment and amplify humans, not replace them,” said Avinash Balachandran, Senior Manager of TRI’s Human Centric Driving Research. “Through this project, we are expanding the region in which a car is controllable, with the goal of giving regular drivers the instinctual reflexes of a professional race car driver to be able to handle the most challenging emergencies and keep people safer on the road.” 


Every year, car crashes result in nearly 40,000 fatalities in the United States and about 1.35 million fatalities worldwide. While most crashes occur in mundane situations, in some extreme situations drivers may need to make maneuvers that take their vehicle close to and, at times, beyond normal limits of handling. 


One year ago, TRI and the Dynamic Design Lab at Stanford University set out to design a new level of active safety to help avoid crashes and prevent injuries and fatalities. With the support of automotive performance specialist GReddy and drift legend Ken Gushi, today’s achievement is another step in that journey. By building skills comparable to an expert driver, this technology can amplify and augment a regular driver’s ability to respond to dangerous and extreme situations, helping keep people safe on the road.    


“When faced with wet or slippery roads, professional drivers may choose to ‘drift’ the car through a turn, but most of us are not professional drivers,” said Jonathan Goh, TRI Research Scientist. “That’s why TRI is programming vehicles that can identify obstacles and autonomously drift around obstacles on a closed track.”


This achievement brings TRI researchers closer to understanding the full spectrum of vehicle performance. The software advances announced today calculate a whole new trajectory every twentieth of a second to balance the car gracefully as it goes around the track.

Inspired by the Skills of Professional Drift Drivers, Research Seeks to Combine the Technology of Vehicle Automation with Artificial Intelligence Algorithms

LOS ALTOS, Calif.(January 14, 2021) – What if every driver who ran into trouble had the instinctive reflexes of a professional race car driver and the calculated foresight of a supercomputer to avoid a crash? Researchers at Toyota Research Institute are working with Stanford’s Dynamic Design Lab to make this vision come true.

The engineers are conducting research into how to bring together the instincts of professional drivers and automated driving technology. Their goal is to design a new level of active safety technology and share it broadly so that Toyota and other auto manufacturers can deploy it on the road.

“Every day, there are deadly vehicle crashes that result from extreme situations where most drivers would need superhuman skills to avoid a collision,” said Gill Pratt, TRI CEO and Chief Scientist at Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC). “The reality is that every driver has vulnerabilities, and to avoid a crash, drivers often need to make maneuvers that are beyond their abilities. Through this project, TRI will learn from some of the most skilled drivers in the world to develop sophisticated control algorithms that amplify human driving abilities and keep people safe. This is the essence of the Toyota Guardian™ approach.”

When faced with wet or slippery roads for instance, professional drivers may choose to ‘drift’ the car through a turn.

“Since 2008, our lab has taken inspiration from human race car drivers in designing algorithms that enable automated vehicles to handle the most challenging emergencies,” said Professor Chris Gerdes of Stanford University’s Dynamic Design Laboratory.  “Through this research, we have the opportunity to move these ideas much closer to saving lives on the road.”

TRI has supported the Dynamic Design Lab’s research for many years. The current project draws upon Stanford’s published paper, “Opening New Dimensions: Vehicle Motion Planning and Control using Brakes while Drifting,” in which Stanford researchers demonstrated advanced drifting on MARTY, an electrified, automated DeLorean. Stanford’s experimental results produced a proof-of-concept architecture capable of controlling a rear-wheel drive vehicle in a drift using brakes, steering and propulsion. TRI is now applying this architecture to vehicle platforms, including the GR Supra.

TRI is also engaging Toyota’s engineering expertise in motorsports and advanced development. Toyota Racing Development (TRD U.S.A., Inc.) in the United States is providing valuable technical and experiential know-how in motorsports and drifting. Separately, TRI is also working with Toyota Motor Corporation’s Vehicle Dynamics Control Team — based in Japan — to apply the drifting architecture for future Toyota vehicles.

Best of Show and Best Supra Awards at the 2019 SEMA Show for GReddy Performance Products

 
With a prime booth location, the GReddy booth was busy.  Especially after taking home multiple top honors at the 2019 SEMA Show in Las Vegas.


The 2019 SEMA Show was another very successful show for the GReddy Performance Products, Inc.   On Tuesday, the 1st day of the show, the GPP Team was very proud to accept the "Best GR Supra" of the show.  With over 60 Supras on display, this was quite an honor.

And late Thursday towards the end of the show we were pleasantly surprised to be awarded the "Best of Show" prize from Super Street Magazine for the 2nd year in a row.  (2018 - GReddy Rocket Bunny Pandem FC3S and now the 2019 - GReddy "Drift Concept" Supra)

Awarded by SuperStreet Magazine - Megular's SEMA Ultimate Award "Best of Show"

But the GReddy "Drift Concept" Supra wasn't our only project car our Special Projects Department was working on or assisting.  Just outside the main lobby was our GReddy x Evasive "Street Supra" and our Greddy demo Civic Si.



Another popular International hit, was our JDM Jimmy project with Japan's Car Style

As well as assisting some booth vehicles for TRA Kyoto (Rocket Bunny Pandem) Toyo Tires / Nissan, Toyota and Honda...  (Toyo - Pandem S13 Silvia, Toyo - Nissan Titan Rebellio, Toyota - 3000GT Concept, Honda - Daniel Wu's S800 Outlaw)

    The GTX2867R Gen2 Turbocharger in the GPP Tuner Turbo Kit is rated for 550hp and is easily able to make even more power by increasing the boost level (additional engine strengthening required)

    NOTE:  For reliability reasons, GPP doe not recommend boosting more then 12psi on a stock FA20 engine.  Overboosting can lead to premature engine failure.   


    To equalize all competitors, each car used the stock oem FA20 engine with the same: engine oil, radiator, oil cooler, coil-overs, anti-sway bars, brake pads, brake rotors, wheels, tires.  They were also tuned by the same tuner on 91 octane.

    THE GPP RESULTS

    The GPP Turbocharged FR-S had the quickest track lap, the second highest dyno numbers (at a 4.5psi lower base boost level) and second highest overall Editor's Driving Impression score.
